VIRTUAL

Finding new efficiencies in
optimising design and delivery
are more important than ever

28 June – 1 July 2020
About the

Virtual VE Summit

As construction and engineering firms continue to experience challenges such as low profitability and margin, as well as a raft of new issues put forward by the global spread of COVID-19, optimising the design and delivery of projects and finding new efficiencies is more important than ever.

The third edition of the Value Engineering Summit was previously scheduled to take place on March 30. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic the event has been postponed. Due to popular demand and now increased importance of this topic, the team felt that the proverbial show must go on.

Finding New Efficiencies

COVID-19 has had a tremendous impact on economies across the world including on those of the GCC countries. This has filtered down to every sector including construction, which has meant that budgets and costings for new and ongoing projects have come under added scrutiny, as clients/developers seek to get more value for their money. This panel seeks to explore how true value engineering can ensure projects go to schedule, while maintaining quality and stakeholder margins.

Talking Points:

Ensuring that all project stakeholders are engaged and embrace transparency, efficiency and true value engineering as best practice right from the start of a project

Accurate costings are critical to ensuring unpleasant surprises are kept to a minimum later in the project’s design and delivery cycle

Efficient and achievable designs are key to a project’s success as budgets continue to shrink

Innovating with project delivery to ensure that quality and schedules are maintained, while costs remain within acceptable limits

Intertwining value engineering with construction supply chain management to ensure flexibility and a stable supply of materials across the project delivery cycle
June 29

A True Collaborative Approach

Construction projects are massive and complex undertakings with multiple stakeholders and dependencies. Due to this, some form of conflict is widely considered as almost inevitable and governing contracts, due to several reasons, also have the potential to create delays and disputes. This panel will look at steps that can be taken to better align stakeholders and minimise the potential for projects to be derailed by claims, disputes and delays.

Talking Points:

Common causes of problems on regional construction projects and the steps project stakeholders can take to minimise or avoid claims, disputes and delays

Amending construction contracts to take into account the nuances of delivering a project with new rules and regulations driven by the outbreak of COVID-19

Structuring contracts to ensure project success and ensuring that all relevant parties fully understand rather than individually interpret what the contract outlines

Linking the supply chain’s incentives to the success of the project as a whole, so that the entire project team becomes more fully integrated and committed to positive project performance

Selecting an appropriate contracting strategy to ensure success on construction projects that are fast-tracked
June 30

The Call of Technology

New technology is frequently said to be the game-changer firms need to differentiate themselves in a highly competitive sector. However, cost concerns and an aversion to technology has meant that many construction companies have only taken incremental stems into integrating technology into their thinking and workflows. The panel will explore what new technology could potentially bring to the table in term of design and delivery in the current period, and the potential challenges of pulling off such a transition during these challenging times.

Talking Points:

Will the outbreak of COVID-19 and new safety regulations push construction companies to adopt existing or emerging tech tools to keep projects on track? Is this the driver that will challenge traditional mindsets?

What efficiency and cost benefits can fully digitising collaboration and workflows bring to construction projects in terms of a project’s design and delivery process?

What are the challenges to adopting new technology and solutions in the current climate, how can these issues be addressed?

Is 3D printing, offsite fabrication and modular construction the answer to keeping projects on track from a delivery standpoint or are these merely a stop-gap solution to something else? What are the challenges with these existing solutions?

What emerging technology has the potential to have the broadest impact on the construction industry and projects across the GCC?
